Your total stopping distance at 30mph is 23 metres, and at 70mph it is 96 metres, according to Rule 126 of the Highway Code. That total is always two things added together: thinking distance (how far you travel while you react) plus braking distance (how far you travel once the brakes are on). At 30mph that splits 9 metres thinking and 14 braking; at 70mph it is 21 thinking and 75 braking. Those are the official figures for a family car on a dry, clear road, and every one of them can appear in your theory test.

Here is the thing most learners miss. Stopping distance is not one number to memorise, it is a pattern. Read down the total column and notice how fast it grows. Doubling your speed from 30 to 60 does not double the stopping distance, it roughly triples it, from 23 metres to 73. That is physics, not a quirk of the chart, and it is exactly why a small increase in speed matters so much near schools, junctions and parked cars.

What is stopping distance? Thinking plus braking

Stopping distance is the total distance a vehicle travels from the moment you spot a hazard to the moment it comes to a complete stop. The Highway Code splits it into two parts because they are caused by two different things:

  • Thinking distance is how far the car travels while you notice the hazard, decide to brake, and move your foot to the pedal. Nothing is slowing the car yet.
  • Braking distance is how far the car travels after the brakes bite, while friction actually scrubs off the speed.

Keep them separate in your head, because they respond to speed in different ways, and different things make each one worse. That distinction is worth real marks in the theory test and, more importantly, real metres on the road.

Thinking distance: the part that is on you

Thinking distance is driver reaction, pure and simple, and it climbs in a straight line with speed. The Highway Code bases it on a reaction time of just under 0.7 seconds. At 30mph you cover 9 metres before you have even touched the brake; at 70mph it is 21 metres, the length of about five cars, gone while you are still reacting.

The uncomfortable part is that this is the bit you control. Anything that slows your reaction stretches it out:

  • Tiredness. Reactions dull long before you feel sleepy. On a long drive, take a proper break every couple of hours.
  • Distraction. A phone, the sat-nav, fiddling with the heating, a lively conversation. Even a hands-free call pulls your attention off the road.
  • Alcohol and drugs. Both slow reaction time, which is a large reason drink and drug driving are so dangerous.
  • Speed itself. Faster car, more metres covered in the same fraction of a second.

This is where hazard awareness earns its keep. The sooner you register a developing problem, the shorter your effective thinking distance. It is the same skill the hazard perception part of the theory test is built to measure, and it carries straight into the way you scan the road once you pass.

Braking distance: where speed really bites

Braking distance is the sharp end of the table. Unlike thinking distance, it does not rise in a straight line, it rises with the square of your speed. Go from 30 to 60mph, double your speed, and braking distance leaps from 14 metres to 55, close to four times as far. That squared relationship is the single most important idea on this page.

Braking distance also depends on the car and the road, not just you:

  • Tyres. Tread depth and grip are everything. Tests have shown that tyres worn to 3mm of tread stop about a third further than new tyres. The legal minimum is 1.6mm, but grip is already fading well before that.
  • Brakes and suspension. Worn pads or tired suspension lengthen the distance. ABS does not shorten braking distance on a normal road, it keeps you steering while you brake hard.
  • Road surface. Wet, ice, mud, loose gravel, spilt diesel, fallen leaves, all reduce grip and stretch the distance.
  • Weight. A fully loaded car with passengers and luggage takes longer to pull up than an empty one.

Keep your tyres and brakes healthy and you keep that table honest. Neglect them and your real braking distance quietly drifts longer than any figure in the Highway Code.

Stopping distances in the wet and on ice

The Highway Code table is for a dry road. The moment the surface changes, so do the figures, and Rule 126 is specific about how much.

  • Wet roads: the gap should be at least doubled. Rain roughly doubles your braking distance, so the safe distance behind the car in front should double too.
  • Icy roads: up to ten times greater. On ice the Highway Code says the gap can need to be as much as ten times the dry distance.

Ten times is not a figure of speech. Take 70mph on ice and a 96-metre dry stopping distance can stretch towards the length of nine or ten football pitches before the car finally stops. In snow, ice or heavy rain the honest answer is to slow right down, because no following distance fully saves you once grip has gone.

How to remember stopping distances (the easy way)

You do not have to brute-force the table. There is a well-known trick that rebuilds every total figure from memory, and once it clicks you will never lose it.

Step 1: get the thinking distance. It is roughly one foot per mph, or in metres, take the tens digit and multiply by 3. So 30mph gives 9 metres, 50mph gives 15, 70mph gives 21. Straight-line, no drama.

Step 2: use a multiplier for the whole stopping distance. Start at 20mph, and multiply the speed by a factor that goes up by 0.5 each step:

  • 20mph, multiply by 2, equals 12 metres… near enough
  • 30mph, multiply by 2.5, equals 23 metres… near enough
  • 40mph, multiply by 3, equals 36 metres… near enough
  • 50mph, multiply by 3.5, equals 53 metres… near enough
  • 60mph, multiply by 4, equals 73 metres… near enough
  • 70mph, multiply by 4.5, equals 96 metres… near enough

The multiplier climbs 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5 as the speed climbs in tens. Learn that little ladder and you can rebuild the total for any speed without a chart. Then subtract the thinking distance from step one, and you have the braking distance too. Practise it a handful of times and the whole table lives in your head for good.

The 2-second rule: turning distance into something usable

Metres are fine on paper, but you cannot measure 96 metres at 70mph through the windscreen. That is what the two-second rule is for. It converts stopping distance into a simple timing check you can do on the move.

Pick a fixed point ahead, a sign, a bridge, a lamppost. When the car in front passes it, start counting: “only a fool breaks the two-second rule.” If you reach the same point before you finish saying it, you are too close, so ease back. On high-speed roads and in tunnels the Highway Code (Rule 126) asks for at least a two-second gap.

Is it a 2-second or 3-second rule? In dry conditions, two seconds is the standard UK guide. Some drivers prefer three seconds for a bigger margin, and there is nothing wrong with that. The number that is fixed is what to do when it rains.

What about the wet? Double it to at least four seconds when the road is wet, because braking distance has doubled. On ice, leave far more still. The two-second rule is a rough guide, not a law, so treat it as a minimum on a good day, never a target.

Will you get a ticket for doing 32 in a 30?

This one comes up constantly, and it matters because speed drives everything in the table. The speed limit is a hard legal limit, not a target, and there is no lawful “buffer.” Enforcement guidance used by many police forces allows a small margin before action is usually taken, but that is guidance for the police, not permission for you, and it varies by force and situation. Assume any speed over the posted limit can be penalised, because it can.

The safer way to think about it: every extra mph lengthens your braking distance and shortens the room you have to react. Sticking to the limit, and going below it when the conditions are poor, is what keeps the Highway Code figures on your side.
