Frequently asked questions
01 Courses & levels
All four courses include the same expert teaching and test-date help, the only difference is how many hours you need, and the less experience you have the more you'll want. Provisional (10–15 hrs) is a final polish for near test-ready learners. Improver (20–30 hrs) suits part-trained learners closing the gaps. Advanced (35–45 hrs) is a thorough route for newer learners. Elite (50 hrs) is the full programme built for complete beginners. Advanced and Elite describe the depth of the course, not your ability.
Intensive means longer lessons packed into one to a few weeks, so you progress quickly. Semi-intensive spreads shorter lessons over several weeks. Same syllabus and the same number of hours, you simply choose the pace that fits your life.
Most intensive days run between two and six hours behind the wheel, often split with short breaks so you stay sharp rather than worn out. The right daily length depends on your stamina and how quickly things click, we'll shape a schedule that keeps you progressing without overloading you, and adjust it as the course goes on.
Absolutely, complete beginners are welcome. The 50-hour Elite programme is built for never-driven learners, with maximum support from your first time behind the wheel. We'll always recommend the right number of hours honestly once we've assessed where you are.
Both are available on every course. Choose your transmission when you enquire and we'll match you with an instructor who teaches in it.
It comes down to what you want to drive. Pass in a manual and your licence covers both manual and automatic cars. Pass in an automatic and you're licensed for automatics only, you'd need a separate test later to drive a manual. Automatics are often quicker to get comfortable in, with no clutch or gears to manage, which can mean fewer hours; a manual keeps every car open to you. Tell us your preference when you enquire and we'll match you accordingly.
Tell us your postcode and roughly where you're up to, beginner to nearly test-ready, and we'll recommend the right number of hours honestly. We'd rather put you on the course that fits than over-sell hours you don't need. Compare the courses and pricing.
02 Getting started, what you need
Yes, a valid UK provisional driving licence is a legal requirement before you can drive on the road, so yours needs to be in place before your course begins. You can apply on GOV.UK and it usually arrives within a week or two, so it's worth sorting early. Bring it to every session.
You can drive a car on a provisional licence from your 17th birthday, or from 16 if you receive the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP. You can apply for your provisional up to three months early, from 15 years and 9 months, so it's ready the day you're eligible to drive.
You don't legally need it to start learning, but you must have passed your theory before you can sit the practical, so for an intensive course we strongly recommend getting theory done first. Theory training and support are included to help you get there, and we'll happily plan your course around your theory date.
Yes. You must be able to read a current-style number plate from 20 metres away, with glasses or contact lenses if you normally wear them for driving. It's worth checking before you book, because you'll be asked to do exactly this at the start of your practical test, and not meeting it ends the test before it begins.
It can be, and for many anxious learners the steady momentum actually helps, because skills stay fresh between sessions rather than fading over weeks. The key is choosing enough hours and the right pace. If you'd rather build up gradually, a semi-intensive course spreads the same hours over longer. Tell us how you feel about driving when you enquire and we'll be honest about what suits you.
Yes. If you're a returning driver or recently fell short on your test, a shorter course can sharpen the specific areas that need work. Tell us your postcode and what happened last time, and we'll recommend the right number of top-up hours, no more than you need.
03 Pricing & payment
Price depends on your course length and your area, as instructor availability varies across the country. Tell us your postcode and where you're up to and we'll send a tailored quote. Prices exclude the DVSA theory and practical test fees, which you pay directly.
Your one-to-one tuition hours with a DVSA-approved instructor, theory training support, and help securing an early practical test date. Courses are all-inclusive with no surprise extras. The DVSA theory and practical test fees are not included, you book and pay for those directly with the DVSA.
These are set by the DVSA and paid directly to them, separately from your course. The theory test is £23. The practical test is £62 on a weekday, or £75 in the evening, at a weekend or on a bank holiday. We'll factor your test timing into your plan, but the fees themselves are always yours to pay the DVSA.
Start by telling us your postcode and where you're up to. We'll match you to an approved local instructor and send a tailored quote. A non-refundable deposit secures your place; the remaining balance is due 7 days before your course starts (28 days in advance for learners under 18). Full details are in our Terms & Conditions.
The deposit that secures your place is non-refundable, because it reserves an instructor's time. Cancellation and rescheduling terms are set out in full in our Terms & Conditions, if your plans change, talk to us as early as you can and we'll do what we reasonably can to help.
Payment options can vary by instructor and area. As standard, a non-refundable deposit secures your place and the balance is due 7 days before your course starts (28 days in advance for under-18s). If you'd like to discuss spreading the cost, mention it when you enquire and we'll tell you honestly what's possible where you are.
Yes, an intensive course makes a great gift for a birthday, a milestone or a school leaver. Get in touch with the details and we'll explain how to arrange it, and make sure the right course is matched to the learner's experience once they're ready to start.
04 Theory & practical tests
Yes, theory training and support are included on every course to help you get your theory solid. The theory test itself is booked and paid for separately with the DVSA.
The practical test fee is your own and isn't included. Since 12 May 2026, course providers can no longer book a learner's practical test, so you book and pay for it yourself. What we do is help you find and secure an early date, watching for cancellations and short-notice slots, and make sure you walk in properly prepared.
You'll normally take your test in your instructor's car, a vehicle you already know, fitted with dual controls and properly insured for tests. You'd only use your own car if you'd arranged it specially, in which case it has to meet the DVSA's rules and carry the right insurance. For almost everyone, using the instructor's car is by far the simplest option.
Waits for a practical test slot have been long across much of the UK, often several months at busier centres. That's exactly why we help you secure the earliest realistic date, keeping an eye out for cancellations and short-notice slots so your course and your test line up as closely as possible. Remember that since 12 May 2026 you book the test yourself, we help you find the date.
It happens, and it isn't the end of the road. By DVSA rules you must wait at least 10 working days before sitting another practical test. Your instructor will go through exactly what to work on, you can book a few top-up hours to polish those areas, and you rebook your test when you're ready. We'd always rather you pass properly than rush back unprepared.
Your provisional licence is the essential one, without it the test can't go ahead. Bring your glasses or contact lenses if you wear them for driving, and arrive in good time so you're calm rather than rushed. Your instructor will confirm anything specific to your test centre beforehand.
No, and be wary of anyone who does. The DVSA examiner decides on the day. What we promise is honest, structured preparation and an instructor who'll only put you forward for your test when you're genuinely ready. Choosing enough hours for your experience is the single biggest thing you can do to give yourself the best chance.

Yes. Every instructor in our network is a DVSA-approved Approved Driving Instructor (ADI), fully insured for tuition. We operate a strict zero-tolerance policy on unprofessional conduct.
That's the aim, continuity matters, and learning with one instructor who knows how you're progressing makes a real difference over an intensive week. In the rare event something changes, we'll arrange another suitable approved instructor so your course stays on track.
Yes, just let us know when you enquire and we'll do our best to match you, subject to availability in your area. Feeling comfortable behind the wheel matters, so it's always worth asking.
