What Is Black Ice? How to Spot It and Drive on It Safely

Black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice on the road that you almost never see coming. It looks like a harmless wet or damp patch because the dark road surface shows straight through it, which is exactly why it is so dangerous: your tyres lose grip with no warning. It forms most often on bridges, shaded bends and early on frosty mornings, and the safe reaction is to stay off the brakes, ease off the accelerator and hold the wheel steady until the tyres bite again.

That is the short version. Now let me talk you through it properly, the way I would from the passenger seat on a cold January lesson, because black ice is the one hazard newly passed drivers ask me about most – and the one where panic does far more damage than the ice itself.

Why is it called black ice if it isn’t black?

Black ice isn’t actually black. It is clear. The name comes from the colour of the road underneath it. Normal ice traps tiny air bubbles as it freezes, which scatter light and make it look white, frosty or dull grey – you can see it, so you slow down for it. Black ice freezes so thinly and smoothly that no bubbles get trapped, so it stays glassy and see-through. The dark tarmac shows through the ice, and your eyes read “wet road”, not “sheet of ice”.

That is the whole trap. A road that just looks slightly damp under a streetlight at 7am can be frozen solid. You cannot spot it the way you spot snow, so you have to spot the conditions instead. More on that below.

What causes black ice to form?

Black ice needs two things: water on the road surface and a temperature at or below freezing. It usually forms in one of three ways, and knowing them is how you predict where it will be before you get there.

  • Refreezing. Snow or slush melts during the day, or rain falls in the evening, then the temperature drops overnight and that surface water freezes into a smooth glaze. This is the classic overnight-into-morning black ice.
  • Freezing rain or drizzle. Rain falls onto a road that is already below freezing and turns to ice the instant it lands. This can coat a road in minutes.
  • Condensation and dew freezing. On a clear, still, cold night, moisture in the air (including damp from vehicle exhausts sitting in cold, calm spots) settles on the tarmac and freezes directly onto it.

A dashboard reading of 3 or 4 degrees does not mean you are safe, by the way. The road surface is often colder than the air, especially just before dawn, so black ice can be present when your car’s thermometer says a few degrees above zero. Treat anything near freezing as a risk.

Where does black ice form? The high-risk spots

Black ice isn’t spread evenly across a journey. It clings to specific places, and if you learn them you can read a road and back off before you reach the danger rather than reacting on top of it. These are the spots I point out to every pupil in winter.

How do you spot black ice before you hit it?

You often cannot see the ice itself, so you read the clues around it. Here is what I teach:

  • The road looks wet but nothing is spraying up. On a genuinely wet road, tyres throw up a fine mist and you hear that hiss of water. If the surface looks damp but it is silent and dry-sounding, that “wet” sheen may be ice.
  • Frost on the verges, hedges, parked cars and pavements. If everything beside the road is white with frost, the road is cold enough to be frozen too.
  • A sudden light, floaty feeling through the steering. If the wheel goes oddly light and quiet, or the car feels like it is gliding, you may already be on it. Do not make any sudden input.
  • The temperature reading. A snowflake warning light or a reading near or below 3 degrees is your cue to assume ice is possible, particularly on bridges and in shade.

Eyes well up the road, not just over the bonnet. The earlier you read the conditions, the gentler and earlier every decision can be – and gentle and early is the whole game on ice.

What should you do if you hit black ice?

Here is the bit that catches people out. Your instinct will be to stamp on the brake. Don’t. Braking hard on ice locks the wheels or triggers a slide, and a sliding car cannot steer. The Met Office is clear on this: avoid harsh braking and sudden steering, because sharp inputs are what break traction completely.

Work through it calmly:

  1. Take your foot off the accelerator. Ease off smoothly, do not lift off sharply. Let the car slow itself on the engine.
  2. Keep the steering still and pointed where you want to go. Hold the wheel steady with both hands. No sudden corrections.
  3. Do not brake if you can avoid it. Black ice is usually patchy, so let the car coast until the tyres find grip again on the tarmac beyond it.
  4. If the back of the car steps out, steer gently into the slide. If the rear slides to the right, ease the wheel slightly to the right, then straighten up as it recovers. Small, smooth movements – you are guiding it, not wrestling it.
  5. Brake only once you feel grip return, and even then squeeze the brake progressively rather than stabbing at it. If your car has ABS (almost all modern cars do), keep firm, steady pressure on the pedal and let the system pulse the brakes for you, exactly as you would in a proper emergency stop.

The single most useful habit is the one you set up long before the slide: leave a big gap. The Highway Code (Rule 230) tells drivers to keep well back in icy and snowy weather because stopping distances can be ten times greater than on a dry road. The RAC puts that in real terms: in snow it could take you further than the length of seven football pitches to stop from 70mph. If you have left yourself room, a patch of black ice is a wobble. If you are tailgating, it is a collision.

How do you avoid black ice in the first place?

The safest way to handle black ice is to make it a non-event. That is mostly about how you prepare and how gently you drive.

Prepare the car (and yourself). The Highway Code, Rule 229, says before you drive in ice and snow you MUST clear all snow and ice from every window so you can see, make sure your lights are clean and number plates visible, and demist the windows and clear the mirrors thoroughly. Give yourself extra time – rushing is how gentle inputs turn into sharp ones. And Rule 228 is blunt: do not drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential. If the roads are treacherous and the trip can wait, waiting is a legitimate, sensible choice.

Drive the way the Highway Code describes for ice. Rule 231 spells out the technique: drive at a slow speed in as high a gear as possible, and accelerate and brake very gently. A higher gear keeps the revs and wheelspin down so the tyres are less likely to break away when you pull off. Slow right down for bends, and brake progressively on the straight before you reach the bend, never mid-corner. You can even check your grip in a safe, empty spot by braking gently and seeing how the car responds.

Check your tyres. Grip is everything on ice, and grip comes from your tyres. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its entire circumference (gov.uk). A quick home check: push a 20p coin into the main grooves – if the outer band of the coin disappears, you are above the limit; if you can see it, your tyres are getting low and need checking by a professional. Worn tyres in winter are genuinely dangerous. Correct tyre pressures matter too, as under-inflated tyres grip and behave poorly in the cold, and checking them takes about two minutes on the forecourt.

Black ice on your driving test and lessons

Learners often worry they will have to “prove themselves” on ice during a test. In practice, if conditions are genuinely dangerous, the DVSA can cancel or postpone a driving test on safety grounds – examiners will not send you out onto sheet ice. A good instructor will instead use icy mornings to teach observation, planning and smooth control at low speed in safe places.
