If your car starts skidding, take your foot off the pedals and steer gently in the direction the back of the car is sliding. Do not stamp on the brake. What is skidding, and what actually causes it?
A skid is when one or more tyres lose grip and start sliding across the road instead of rolling along it. The car stops going where the steering is pointed and starts going where momentum is taking it. That is the horrible, floaty feeling drivers describe.
The Highway Code (Rule 119) names the causes precisely: skidding is usually caused by braking, accelerating or steering too harshly, or driving too fast for the conditions. Notice that three of those four are things the driver does with their hands and feet. Weather does not skid a car on its own – it lowers the grip available, and then a clumsy input uses up what little grip is left.
Here is the way to picture it. Each tyre has a fixed budget of grip. On a dry road that budget is large; in the rain it shrinks; on ice it is almost nothing. You spend that grip on three things: braking, accelerating and turning. Ask a tyre to brake hard and steer sharply at the same moment on a wet bend, and you have written a cheque the grip can’t cash. The tyre slides.

Slow, smooth and early is the theme. Almost every skid a normal driver meets is caused by doing something suddenly. Take the suddenness out of your driving and you take out most of the risk.
Do you steer into or out of a skid?
You steer into the skid – meaning into the direction the rear of the car is sliding. This is the question learners get muddled on, so let’s make it concrete. If the back of the car steps out to the left, steer left. If it steps out to the right, steer right. You are pointing the front wheels the same way the car is already trying to go, which straightens things out and lets the tyres bite again.
“Steer into the skid” and “steer in the direction of the skid” mean the same thing, and they match Rule 119 word for word. The mistake is steering away from the slide – if the back goes right and you instinctively wind the wheel left, the car spins.
Two things matter as much as the direction:
- Look where you want to go, not at what you’re about to hit. Your hands follow your eyes. Fix your gaze down the road on your escape route and the steering tends to sort itself out. Stare at the oncoming kerb and you will steer straight at it.
- Be ready to catch the second slide. As the car straightens, it can overshoot and slide the other way. Gently steer back to catch it, then centre the wheel. Good drivers correct left, then right, then settle – small, smooth movements, not big panicked ones.
What to do if your car skids: the step-by-step drill
When it happens for real it is over in a couple of seconds, so the sequence has to be a reflex. Here it is, in order:
- Get off the pedals. Ease your foot off the accelerator and off the brake. This is the single most important move and the hardest to make, because every instinct screams “brake”. Releasing the pressure lets the tyres start rolling and gripping again.
- Steer gently into the skid. Turn the wheel the same way the back of the car is sliding. Gently – a sharp correction just triggers the opposite slide.
- Look for your escape route and steer towards the clear space, not the obstacle.
- Catch the correction. As grip returns and the car straightens, ease the steering back to centre, ready for a small slide the other way.
- Once you’re straight and slow, brake gently if you still need to – progressively, not all at once.

Front-wheel skid (understeer): when the car won’t turn
A front-wheel skid, or understeer, is when the front tyres lose grip and the car carries straight on even though you are steering into a bend. The steering goes light and vague, and the car ploughs wide towards the outside of the corner. It usually comes from entering a bend too fast, braking into the corner, or too much power through the front wheels on a front-wheel-drive car.
The fix is a little different from a rear slide, and it is counter-intuitive:
- Ease off the accelerator to shift weight forward onto the front tyres and let them find grip.
- Straighten the steering slightly. Winding on more lock does nothing when the front tyres are already sliding – it just keeps them sliding. Reduce the steering angle, wait the half-second for grip to return, then steer again.
- Do not stamp on the brake, which loads the front further and can lock it.
Drive-Tech, a UK driver-training provider, gives the same advice for understeer: as soon as you feel the front push wide, decelerate or declutch and, if you can, reduce the steering to regain traction. Declutching (or lifting off in an automatic) stops the driven wheels pulling and gives the tyres their grip back for steering.
Rear-wheel skid (oversteer): when the back steps out
A rear-wheel skid, or oversteer, is when the back of the car slides out and tries to overtake the front – the “fishtail”. This is the classic skid Rule 119 describes, and it is more common in the wet, on ice, or when a driver lifts off or brakes suddenly mid-bend.
This is where “steer into the skid” earns its keep:
- Ease off the accelerator smoothly (don’t snap off it – a sudden lift can make oversteer worse).
- Steer into the slide. Rear sliding right, steer right; rear sliding left, steer left. Rule 119’s own example: if the rear of the vehicle skids to the right, steer immediately to the right to recover.
- Catch the rebound. As the back comes into line it may swing past centre and slide the other way. Be ready to steer the opposite way to catch it, then settle the wheel straight.
- Keep your eyes up the road on where you want to be.
The whole correction is smooth and progressive. Big, sharp, panicked movements turn one slide into a tank-slapper. Small, early ones bring the car back.
How ABS and traction control help you
Modern cars do a lot of the fighting for you, and knowing what they do (and don’t) stops you working against them.
- ABS (anti-lock braking system) stops the wheels locking under hard braking so you keep steering control. The Highway Code (Rule 120) is specific: in an emergency, apply the footbrake firmly and do not release the pressure until you have slowed to the speed you want – the ABS keeps the wheels turning so you can steer. You may feel the pedal juddering and hear a grinding noise; that is normal, keep your foot planted. One caveat Rule 120 spells out: do not assume a car with ABS will stop in a shorter distance, especially on snow or loose surfaces.
- Traction control (TCS) works at the other end – it stops the driven wheels spinning when you accelerate, which is a huge help pulling away on a wet or icy road. If you feel the accelerator “back off” on its own and see a flashing dashboard light, that is traction control catching a wheelspin before it becomes a skid.
- Electronic Stability Control (ESC / ESP), standard on all new cars sold in the UK since 2014, goes further: it senses the car sliding and brakes individual wheels to pull it back into line. It is brilliant, but it is a safety net, not a substitute for driving to the conditions.
The honest truth: these systems buy you grip and time, but they cannot beat physics. On sheet ice, ABS and stability control still can’t grip what isn’t there. They lower the odds of a skid and soften the ones you get – the smooth, early, unhurried driver is still doing most of the work.
Skidding in the wet, snow and ice: adjust before the skid
The best skid is the one you never have, and that is about the conditions. The Highway Code gives you the numbers to plan around, and they are worth knowing cold:

- Read the road for a lack of grip. Rule 231 flags the tell-tale: if the steering suddenly feels light and unresponsive, that can mean ice and the car losing grip. Bridges, shaded bends and untreated side roads freeze first. - Look after your tyres. The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference, and driving on illegal tyres carries a fine of up to GBP 2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre.
