To drive in snow, keep every input gentle and give yourself far more room than usual. Be honest about whether the trip is necessary. The Highway Code (Rule 228) is blunt about it: do not drive in snow or ice unless your journey is essential. That is not there to nanny you – it is because a road full of drivers who have somewhere important to be is a far safer road than one full of people who could have stayed home. If you are a nervous new driver and the trip can wait, waiting is the correct answer, not the coward’s one.
If you do need to go, the goal shifts from “get there quickly” to “get there in one piece, in control the whole way”. Give yourself much more time than the journey normally takes. Rushing is what turns a slippery road into a collision.
Prepare the car before you move an inch
You are legally required to be able to see and be seen. Under Rule 229 you MUST clear all snow and ice from every window, and you MUST make sure your lights are clean and your number plates are legible. On tread depth: 1.6mm is the legal floor for an MOT, but on snow you want as much tread as you can get – the grooves are what clear slush and bite into the surface. How to pull away in snow without spinning the wheels

Reading a snowy road: where the grip hides and disappears
Two identical-looking stretches of white road can have completely different grip, and learning to read that is what separates a driver who copes from one who gets caught out.
- Bridges and flyovers freeze first and thaw last. Cold air gets underneath them, so they can be sheet ice when the road either side is merely wet. Ease off before you reach one.
- Shaded bends, tree-lined lanes and north-facing slopes stay frozen after the sun has cleared everywhere else. That patch of shadow on a bend is where black ice lives.
- Compacted snow in old wheel tracks is often more slippery than fresh snow, because it has been polished into ice. On an ungritted road, the untouched snow can actually give you more grip than the shiny ruts – the RAC makes this point too.

Going up and down hills in snow
Hills are where snow driving goes wrong most often, and both directions need a plan.
Going up: the enemy is having to stop or change gear halfway, because getting moving again on an incline is brutal. So leave a big gap to the vehicle in front and time your approach to keep rolling at a steady, low speed without stopping. Do not floor it – wheelspin on a hill just kills your momentum. Most cars built this century have ABS (anti-lock braking system) and electronic traction control, and both are genuinely helpful here.
