Before the scored clips start, everyone is shown a short tutorial video that explains how the test works and how the clicking is meant to feel. You do not score on it, and it is not optional – it plays automatically. Watch it properly even if you have practised a hundred clips at home, because it is the official statement of the rules you are about to be marked against, and it spells out the one mistake that costs people clips: clicking continuously or in a pattern.

How the 14 clips are laid out
Once the tutorial finishes, the 14 scored clips begin. A few things to know about the format:
- Each clip runs for roughly one minute and shows a real, moving driver’s-eye view – a residential street, a country lane, a dual carriageway, a town centre, in varying weather and light.
- Every clip contains at least one developing hazard. One single clip contains two, which is how 14 clips produce 15 scoreable hazards.
- The clips play one after another automatically. There is a short pause between them, then the next one starts on its own.
- You respond by clicking the mouse (or tapping, on a touchscreen setup). There is no keyboard input and nothing to read.
You are not told which clip is the one with two hazards, and you are not told how many hazards a clip holds. You treat every clip the same way: watch the whole scene, and click when something genuinely begins to develop.
Developing hazards versus potential hazards
This is the distinction the entire test turns on, and it is where most low scores come from.
A potential hazard is something that could become a problem but is not making you do anything yet – a car parked at the side of the road, a side road up ahead, a pedestrian standing on the pavement, a bend coming up. A developing hazard is the moment that potential turns into something you would actually have to respond to: the parked car’s door opens, a car edges out of that side road, the pedestrian steps off the kerb into the road, an oncoming vehicle drifts across the centre line.
Only developing hazards score. You get nothing for clicking the instant you see a parked car, because at that point nothing is developing. The skill is watching the potential hazards and clicking the moment one tips over into actually developing. A useful test in your head: “would a careful driver have to slow down, stop or steer because of this, right now?” If yes, click. The DVSA’s own guidance is blunt: click as soon as you see the hazard starting to develop – not when it is obvious, at the start.
How the scoring window works
Each developing hazard has a hidden scoring window that opens the instant the hazard begins to develop and closes once it is fully developed. Your score depends on where in that window your click lands:
- Click right at the start of the window (early recognition): up to 5 points.
- Click in the middle: typically 3 or 4 points.
- Click late, near the end of the window when the hazard is unmissable: 1 or 2 points.
- Miss the window entirely: 0 points for that hazard.
So the same correct click is worth five points or one point depending purely on timing. That is the whole game: not whether you spot the hazard, but how early. One reassuring detail straight from the DVSA: you do not lose points for clicking at the wrong time or getting it wrong. A click that does not land in any scoring window simply does not score – it is not a penalty. The only thing that is penalised is a clicking pattern, which is a different matter entirely.
Why you can’t go back
You get one attempt at each clip, and there is no pause, rewind or replay. Once a clip has played, it is gone, and the next one starts. If you think you missed a hazard, there is nothing to do but let it go and stay sharp for the next clip – dwelling on it is how people then miss the obvious hazard in clip nine.
This is deliberate. The road does not give you a second look at a child stepping out from between parked cars, so neither does the test. It is simulating the one thing that matters most in real driving: reading what is developing in front of you, the first time, with no rewind. Treat it as the point, not as an unfair restriction.
What scores zero on a whole clip
Two situations wipe out a clip:
- Clicking continuously or in a regular rhythm. The software has an anti-cheating system. If you click steadily throughout a clip – the old “just keep clicking so you catch every hazard early” idea – it reads that as gaming the test, shows a warning message, and scores that entire clip zero, no matter how well-timed your real clicks were. This is the single biggest self-inflicted failure on the test.
- Missing the scoring window. If no click of yours falls inside a hazard’s window, that hazard scores nothing. Click too late on every hazard and you can fail without ever triggering the anti-cheat system at all.

You will not see a running score during the test; the result comes at the end, reported separately from your multiple-choice score.
