How a semi-intensive driving course works

A semi-intensive driving course isn’t a fixed hour count or tier – it’s a pacing option available across any of our courses, for learners who want faster progress than weekly lessons but can’t clear a full consecutive week. Instead of daily blocks, you have 3-4 sessions a week, each 2-3 hours, spread across roughly 3-6 weeks depending on how many total hours you need. You still keep the same instructor throughout, so nothing gets lost between sessions the way it can with occasional weekly lessons booked through different instructors.

Weeks 1-2Sessions 3-4 times a week build core control and confidence, with enough gap between each one to practise privately if you can, but not so much that skills fade.
Weeks 3-4More complex roads and manoeuvres, moving toward independent driving as your total hours build up toward whichever tier’s target you’re working to.
Final weeksMock tests worked in once you’re within a few hours of your target, timed against a realistic test-booking date.

Who this suits

Ideal if you’re studying, working shifts, or otherwise can’t take a full week off, but still want noticeably faster progress than a single lesson a week. It’s also a good middle ground if you’re nervous about the pace of a fully intensive course and would rather build up gradually with more recovery time between sessions.

Booking your test under the 2026 DVSA rules

Practical tests are booked directly with the DVSA at gov.uk – booking is self-book only, and since 12 May 2026 third-party scanning or slot-finding apps are banned. That booking step is always yours to complete, never GetMyPass’s. Once booked you can change your date up to 2 times, giving at least 10 working days’ notice, and the DVSA fee is £62 on weekdays or £75 for an evening, weekend or bank holiday slot. What GetMyPass does is get you genuinely test-ready to a realistic timeline and help you understand how to spot early availability within the DVSA’s own system – we never book or arrange your test, and the DVSA examiner alone decides who passes.

FAQs

How is semi-intensive different from weekly lessons?

Weekly lessons are typically one hour, once a week, often with whichever instructor happens to be available. A GetMyPass semi-intensive course keeps the same instructor throughout and books 3-4 longer sessions a week, so you’re covering roughly 3-4 times the ground in the same calendar period, without needing a full week off work or study. The consistency matters as much as the volume: with one instructor and a running plan, each session picks up exactly where the last one ended, instead of restarting with recaps. You also keep enough space between sessions for skills to settle, which many learners find helps things click. It’s the middle path GetMyPass offers between a slow weekly drip-feed and a fully intensive week.

How many total hours will I need?

The same as any GetMyPass tier – it depends on your starting experience, not on the pacing. You might need around 10-15 hours if you’re already close to test standard, up to 50 for a complete beginner on the Elite programme; semi-intensive just changes how those hours are spread across your calendar, not how many you need overall. As a reference point, the DVSA finds most learners need around 45 hours of professional tuition in total to reach test standard. We assess your driving before you pay and recommend a number honestly, and you can top up in blocks at the same rate if you need more. GetMyPass matches the hours to you first, then fits the pacing around your life.

Can you guarantee I’ll pass?

No – and GetMyPass would encourage you to be wary of anyone who claims they can. The DVSA examiner alone decides on the day, whatever pace you learn at. What we promise is honest, structured preparation: the same instructor across all your sessions, a plan matched to your actual starting point, and a professional who’ll only put you forward when you’re genuinely ready. Choosing the right course length for your experience is the biggest single factor within your control, and semi-intensive pacing doesn’t change that arithmetic – it just spreads it out across your calendar. Honest hour-matching before you pay, and real preparation after it, is what GetMyPass stands behind.
