How We Vet Driving Instructors

Instructor standards

How we vet
driving instructors.

No mystery process, no invented badges. Here is exactly what we require from every instructor in the GetMyPass network, how we match you with one, and - just as important - what you can check for yourself before your first lesson.

The baseline

DVSA approval. No exceptions.

Every instructor we match learners with must be a DVSA-approved driving instructor (ADI): fully qualified and on the official register held by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. That is the non-negotiable entry requirement to the GetMyPass network, and we think it should be the entry requirement for anyone teaching you to drive.

We are deliberately honest about why this matters. The most rigorous vetting of a driving instructor in Britain is done by the DVSA itself, and ADI status is not a formality. To register, an instructor must:

  • pass the DVSA's three qualifying examinations - an advanced theory test, a demanding test of their own driving ability, and a test of their instructional ability;
  • pass an enhanced criminal record check as part of registration;
  • undergo periodic DVSA standards checks, where an examiner observes a real lesson and grades the quality of the instruction;
  • renew their registration with the DVSA every four years.

We do not pretend to run a private driving exam on top of that; no driving school could do it better than the regulator does. Our job is different: to only work with instructors who hold that qualification, and to match you with the right one.

How matching works

A transparent model, two clear relationships.

GetMyPass is a booking and coordination service, not a franchise that employs instructors. When you book a course, you enter two straightforward relationships - and we are upfront about who you pay for what.

01

With GetMyPass

Your deposit to GetMyPass is our arrangement fee. It covers matching you to a DVSA-approved instructor near you who teaches your transmission, placing you on the right course tier for your experience, coordinating your schedule, and being your single point of contact from enquiry to test-ready.

02

With your instructor

Lesson fees are paid directly to your instructor, who delivers your tuition as a qualified, DVSA-regulated professional. No hidden margins on lesson money passing through us: what you pay for teaching goes to the person teaching you.

Matching itself is practical, not algorithmic mystique: location and pickup area, manual or automatic, course tier, and availability that fits the timescale you need. If a match does not work out, we rematch you - and an instructor who falls short of our conduct standards does not keep receiving GetMyPass learners.

Verify it yourself

What you can check before your first lesson.

Never take any driving school's word for it - including ours. These checks take five minutes and apply to any instructor in the UK.

Look for the green ADI badge

A fully qualified ADI must display a green octagonal badge in the windscreen during paid lessons. A pink triangular badge means a trainee instructor (PDI) - ask, if you are unsure.

Check the official register

Use the gov.uk find driving schools and lessons service to confirm an instructor's approval and find DVSA guidance on choosing one.

Expect a proper tuition car

A professional instructor's car should be insured for tuition and will almost always have dual controls. You are entitled to ask about both before you book.

Ask how the money works

With GetMyPass it is simple: deposit to us as the arrangement fee, lesson fees direct to your instructor. Any school should be able to explain its model this clearly.

Straight answers

What we don't claim.

Plenty of driving school websites advertise elaborate-sounding vetting programmes that are difficult to verify from the outside. We would rather be checkable than impressive-sounding, so for the record: we do not run our own driving examinations, we do not issue our own instructor certifications, and we do not publish pass-rate claims for individual instructors that you cannot verify.

What we stand behind is this: every learner is matched with a DVSA-approved instructor, we hold a zero-tolerance policy on unprofessional conduct, we are transparent about how our broker model and fees work, and if something is not right we fix the match. If a claim is not on this page, treat it as something to verify - here or anywhere else.

The founder

Standards set by someone who has done the job.

GetMyPass was founded by Lucas S., an experienced driving school owner who has spent years helping learners go from their first lesson to a test pass. The instructor standards on this page come from that experience: knowing what separates a genuinely good instructor from a merely available one, and refusing to dress up the difference in marketing language.
