That is the short answer. If you have lost the slip, deleted the email, or you are staring at a booking screen that wants a number you cannot remember, do not panic. Almost nobody keeps that little certificate safe, and the system was rebuilt to make recovering the number easy. Where to find your theory test pass number

There are three reliable ways to get your number back. Try them roughly in this order.

1. Check your email. When you passed, the DVSA emailed your theory test result to the address you used to book. That email, and your original booking confirmation, contains the pass certificate number. Search your inbox (including spam and “promotions”) for messages from the DVSA or from the booking service. According to GOV.UK, “your theory test pass certificate number will be sent to the email address you used to book your theory test.” It is usually an eight-character code.

2. Use the GOV.UK recovery service. Go to gov.uk/find-theory-test-pass-number. You will be asked for your UK driving licence number and your theory test booking reference. The service then shows you the number on screen. It is free and takes a couple of minutes, which beats waiting on a phone line.

3. Call the DVSA. If the email is gone and you do not have your booking reference, ring the DVSA theory test enquiry line on 0300 200 1122 (press 01). It is open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, or you can email theorycustomerservices@dvsa.gov.uk. Give them your full name as it appears on your licence, your driving licence number and your date of birth, and they will confirm your number.

Is the theory test pass number the same as the certificate number?

Yes. They are the same number, just called different things in different places. You will see it described as your “pass number”, your “pass certificate number”, and your “theory test certificate number” – all three refer to the single code you were given when you passed. There is no separate “certificate number” hiding somewhere else, so if a form asks for one and you only have the other, you already have what you need.

The confusion is understandable. The paper slip you used to be handed at the test centre was headed “pass certificate”, and the code printed on it was the “certificate number”. The booking system calls the same code your “pass certificate number”. One number, several names.

Can I find my theory test number online?

Yes, through the GOV.UK service above. It is the fastest self-service option and you do not need to speak to anyone. Have two things ready before you start: your UK driving licence number (the long number in section 5 of your photocard) and your theory test booking reference. If you do not have your booking reference, the online route will not work and you will need to phone or email the DVSA instead. That is the only real catch – the service uses the booking reference to find your record, so without it you are routed to the human team.

What if I have lost my theory test certificate?

You recover the number, not the paper. Because the DVSA no longer posts out replacement certificates, “losing” the certificate really just means losing the number, and the number is recoverable in minutes by the three routes above. There is no fee and no penalty for misplacing it.

Two caveats. First, on the day of a car test, “your driving examiner will check that you’ve passed your theory test before your driving test starts” – they look it up, you do not have to produce anything. Second, if the DVSA cannot match your record for some reason, the booking system will ask for the number, and that is when you would use one of the recovery routes above. For lorry, bus and some other test categories the rules differ, and you may be sent a letter to take instead of a certificate.

How long does the theory test pass number last?

Two years. Your theory test pass certificate number is valid for two years from the date you passed, and you must pass your practical driving test within that window. GOV.UK puts it plainly: “your pass certificate number lasts for 2 years. You must pass your driving test in that time, otherwise you’ll have to pass the theory test again.”

There is no way to extend it – not for illness, not for a long wait for a practical test slot, not for anything. Where is my theory test result, and can I check it?

Your result was confirmed on screen at the test centre the moment you finished, and then emailed to your booking address. If you passed, that email holds your pass number. If you want to re-check the result later, the booking and email confirmation are your record – the DVSA does not run a separate public “results portal” where you log in to view a pass after the event. The number in your confirmation email is the proof.

If you genuinely cannot find any trace of the result and are unsure whether you passed, the phone line (0300 200 1122) can confirm your status. That is rare, though. Most people have the email; it is just buried.

Is 46 or 47 out of 50 a good theory test score?

Both are comfortable passes. The multiple-choice section has 50 questions and the pass mark is 43 out of 50, so 46 or 47 clears it with room to spare. You also have to pass the hazard perception section separately, which is scored out of 75 with a pass mark of 44.

Worth knowing: the score does not appear on your pass certificate or affect your pass number in any way. A pass is a pass.
