      Reading the numbers

Why pass rates vary so much

It is rarely the examiners. The centres at the top of the table - the Isles of Scilly, the Highlands, the Scottish islands - test small numbers of candidates on quiet rural roads. The centres at the bottom are in dense towns and cities, where heavy traffic, complex multi-lane junctions and unpredictable conditions make a clean test far harder. The single biggest factor in passing is still how thoroughly you have practised, especially on the roads around the centre you book.

      Methodology & source

      How we built this

      • Source: DVSA driving test statistics (gov.uk), covering the 2025/26 financial year (April to March).
      • Measure: the practical (category B, car) test pass rate at each centre - passes as a percentage of all tests conducted.
      • Coverage: 293 test centres with a published rate. A small number of very low-volume island and Highland centres are excluded where DVSA does not publish a reliable figure.
      • National average: 50.0% in 2025/26 - the highest in the published series.
      • Caveat: a high pass rate does not mean a centre is "easy" for you. Low-volume rural centres flatter the table; your own preparation and familiarity with local roads matter more.

      Questions

Test centre pass rates - FAQ

In the 2025/26 DVSA data the Isles of Scilly (St Mary's) has the highest pass rate at 88%, followed by remote Scottish centres such as Arbroath and Ullapool. They test very few candidates on quiet rural roads, so they are not directly comparable with busy city centres.

Wolverhampton and Featherstone have the lowest rates at around 34%, with busy urban centres such as Chingford, Belvedere and Wednesbury close behind.

50.0% in the 2025/26 financial year, according to DVSA statistics on gov.uk - the highest figure in the published series.

Local road conditions move the numbers - busy junctions and traffic make some centres harder. But the biggest factor is your own preparation. Practising on the roads around your chosen centre matters more than the headline rate.
