What is the four-second rule for driving in the rain?
The four-second rule means leaving a four-second gap to the vehicle in front in the wet, instead of the usual two seconds you leave in the dry. You do it by watching the car ahead pass a fixed point – a lamppost, a sign, a bridge – then counting “only a fool breaks the two-second rule” twice. If you reach the same point before you finish, you are too close, so ease off and drop back.
This comes straight from the Highway Code. Rule 126 tells drivers to “allow at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front on high-speed roads and in tunnels where visibility is reduced. The gap should be at least doubled on wet roads and up to ten times greater on icy roads.” Doubling two seconds gives you four. Read that 70mph line again. In the dry you need roughly 96 metres to stop from motorway speed. In heavy rain you might need close to twice that – well over a hundred metres. What should a driver do when driving in heavy rain?
In heavy rain, do these things in roughly this order:
- Slow down and read the conditions rather than the speed limit. The limit is a maximum for good conditions, not a target for a downpour.
- Increase your gap to at least four seconds, more if visibility is poor or spray is heavy.

Rule 226 makes headlights a legal MUST when visibility drops below 100 metres, and it is good practice to have dipped beams on in any heavy shower so your car and, crucially, your brake lights stand out against the grey. A lorry or fast car throws up a wall of water that can blank your windscreen for a second or two, which at 60mph is a long way driven half-blind. Rule 227 warns that “the rain and spray from vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen.” The fix is space and timing.
- Hang back from large vehicles so you sit outside the worst of their spray plume, not right in it.
- Time your overtake. If you must pass a lorry, be decisive and get through the spray zone promptly rather than sitting alongside it, but only when it is genuinely safe and legal to do so.
- Let the wipers work. Bump them up a setting before the spray hits, not during it, so the screen is already clearing when you need to see.
- Do not fixate on the water. Keep your eyes up and looking for where the road is going; the blank second passes.

How do you demist a windscreen fast in the rain?
To demist fast, put the airflow on the windscreen, turn the heater up, switch on the air conditioning, and use the heated rear screen. The air conditioning is the trick most learners miss: it dries the air before it hits the glass, so the screen clears far quicker than heat alone. Almost every modern car has A/C, and it works even with the heater warm.
The reason your screen fogs in the rain is condensation – warm, damp air from wet coats and your own breath meeting cold glass. So the demist attacks both: dry the air (A/C), and warm the glass (heater on the screen vents). Point the vents at the windscreen and the side windows, not at your face. If it mists up fast the moment you set off, running the A/C continuously will keep it clear, and cracking a window slightly for a few seconds equalises the humidity. Sort your visibility before you move, not while you are driving into a junction unable to see out of a foggy screen.
Driving through floods and standing water
Avoid deep water if you possibly can, and never guess the depth. Heavy rain in Britain regularly leaves puddles that are deeper than they look, and standing water is where wet-weather driving goes from tricky to genuinely dangerous. If you cannot see the road surface through the water, treat it as too deep and find another route.
If you do have to cross a ford or a flooded stretch, the Highway Code (Rule 121) says to use first gear and drive slowly to avoid creating a bow wave, then test your brakes once you are through and before you drive at normal speed. In plain terms:
- Size it up first. Watch another vehicle go through if you can, or get out and check.
- Go one at a time. Wait for oncoming traffic to clear so you are not forced to speed up or swerve.
- Low gear, steady revs, slow speed. Keeping the revs up (with a slipping clutch in a manual, or in a low gear) stops water backing up the exhaust and stalling you, while your slow road speed avoids a bow wave that can flood the engine.
- Test your brakes gently on the far side. Wet discs bite poorly until you have dried them off with a light brush of the pedal.
And the non-negotiable one: never drive through fast-flowing water. It takes surprisingly little to float or sweep a car, and no journey is worth that. Turn around.
What is aquaplaning and what do you do about it?
Aquaplaning is when a layer of water lifts your tyres off the road so they skate across the surface with no grip. You feel it as the steering suddenly going light and vague, and the engine note may rise as the wheels spin up. It happens on standing water at speed, and worn tyres make it far more likely.
Do not panic and do not slam on the brakes or wrench the wheel. Rule 227 is explicit: “if the steering becomes unresponsive, it probably means that water is preventing the tyres from gripping the road. Ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.” So lift off the gas, keep the wheel pointing straight, and let the car slow until you feel the tyres bite the road again. The moment grip returns, you are back in control – just carry on smoothly. It is over in a second or two, and the calmer you stay, the quicker it passes.
The best defence against aquaplaning is not a recovery technique at all; it is speed and tyres. Slower speed means the tyre tread has time to channel the water away, and good tread depth means there is somewhere for the water to go. Which brings us to the thing that quietly makes wet roads lethal.
Why worn tyres are so dangerous in the wet
Your tyres are the only thing connecting you to a wet road, and their tread exists to pump water out from under the car so rubber can still meet tarmac. As the tread wears down, that pumping ability collapses – and it collapses fastest exactly when you need it, in heavy rain at speed. Two cars can brake identically in the dry and stop metres apart in the wet purely because of tyres.
The law is a floor, not a target. The legal minimum car tyre tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the breadth of the tread and around the entire circumference (gov.uk). Drive on tyres below that and you can be fined up to £2,500 and get 3 penalty points for each illegal tyre (gov.uk) – and remember the new-driver rule: 6 penalty points within your first two years of passing revokes your licence (Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995), so two illegal tyres could put a fresh licence straight back to provisional.
Here is the safety point beyond the law: grip in the wet drops off long before you hit 1.6mm. Many tyre manufacturers and safety bodies recommend changing tyres nearer 3mm, and gov.uk safety messaging notes 3mm in winter as good practice. You can check yours in seconds with the 20p test – slot a 20p coin into the main tread grooves, and if the outer band of the coin is visible, your tread is getting low and the tyre needs professional checking.
