Driving in Dundee

Built around your local test centre, not a one-size-fits-all course.

Dundee tests launch straight onto the Kingsway (A90) ring-road dual carriageway and its multi-lane Myrekirk roundabout, then weave through Forfar Road bus-lane sections and the residential grid of Lochee and Clepington Road - a compact but varied circuit. An intensive course with a local instructor means every hour is spent on the roads, junctions and manoeuvres you'll meet on test day - not generic practice.

Dundee has its own test centre on Kilspindie Place at the Dunsinane Industrial Estate, so you sit your test in the city rather than travelling out. We do not hold a verified pass-rate figure for it. For comparison, Arbroath ranks 2nd of 293 centres nationally with a 79% pass rate, well above the 50% national average, and some Dundee learners choose to book there instead. our Arbroath test centre guide.

Why GetMyPass in Dundee

A real driving school for Dundee, not a faceless booking app.

A one to three week intensive block suits Dundee better than a lesson a week spread over months, because the test itself throws a lot at you early: candidates head straight onto the Kingsway (A90) ring road and the multi lane Myrekirk roundabout, where a 50 mph dual carriageway meets a busy retail park approach and you have to read lane markings under speed pressure and commit to exits without hesitating. Learning that skill in scattered weekly sessions means relearning it every time. Compressed into consecutive days, it sticks. Your instructor also knows the Forfar Road bus lane sections and the residential grid around Lochee and Clepington Road, the quieter streets examiners use to test everyday control before sending you back onto the ring road. An intensive course does not shortcut the driving, it just removes the gaps where skills fade between lessons.

Local knowledge

The roads you'll learn on around Dundee.

Dundee has its own challenges. Your instructor builds them into your lessons so nothing on test day is a surprise.

Big multi-lane roundabouts

Dundee is full of large, busy roundabouts - lane discipline and confident observation are practised until they're second nature.

Kingsway (A90) & Myrekirk roundabout

The Myrekirk spiral roundabout sits where a 50 mph dual carriageway meets a busy retail-park approach, training candidates to read lane markings under speed pressure and commit to exits decisively.

Town-centre one-way system

Tight lane changes, frequent junctions and pedestrians through the centre - exactly the busy environment the test puts you in.

Residential manoeuvres

Quieter estates around the town for the test manoeuvres - pulling up on the right, bay parking and reversing - practised where you'll be asked to do them.

Two ways to learn

Driving lessons in Dundee: intensive vs weekly

Spacing lessons a week apart works if your only goal is to get to test standard eventually.

Dundee's test route does not really allow for eventually: the Myrekirk roundabout and the Kingsway dual carriageway are there from day one of a real test, and a five day gap between sessions is enough for the nerve of joining a 50 mph carriageway to fade before it becomes automatic. An intensive course over one to three weeks, by contrast, builds Clepington Road junctions, the Forfar Road bus lane stretches and Lochee's residential grid into consecutive days, so the transition from quiet street to ring road happens while it is still fresh. Deposits run from £180 for the shortest option up to £900 for a fuller course, based on a deposit rate of £18 per hour that secures your instructor's time, with lesson fees paid straight to your instructor rather than bundled into the deposit.

Dundee questions

The essentials, answered honestly.

No. Since 12 May 2026, DVSA rules mean only you can book your own practical test, and driving schools are banned from booking or holding slots on your behalf. What we do instead is prepare you to pass first time and let you know when you are test-ready, so you book with confidence rather than guessing. If you need to change a date afterwards, DVSA requires 10 working days' notice and allows a maximum of two changes, so it is worth booking once you are genuinely ready rather than early and hoping.
You do not need it passed before your first lesson, but you must hold a valid theory test certificate before you can sit your practical test, so it makes sense to get it out of the way early in a Dundee course. Most learners revise theory alongside their first few driving sessions rather than delaying lessons until it is done. Booking your practical test also requires the theory pass number, so leaving it late can hold up how quickly you get a date at Dundee Driving Test Centre once your instructor says you are ready.
Courses start from £180, based on a deposit of £18 per hour that secures your instructor's time rather than covering the whole course upfront. Deposit tiers run £180, £360, £630 and £900 depending on how many hours you book, and lesson fees themselves are paid directly to your instructor as you go. On top of that you will need to budget for the DVSA test fee, which is £62 on a weekday or £75 for an evening or weekend slot at Dundee Driving Test Centre.
The deposit, from £180 upwards at £18 per hour, goes to us to secure a Dundee instructor and lock in your course dates. The lesson fees themselves are paid directly to your instructor, not bundled into that deposit, which keeps pricing transparent as you go. The DVSA test fee is separate again: £62 for a weekday slot or £75 for evenings and weekends, paid to DVSA when you book your own test at Dundee Driving Test Centre.
Not necessarily on the hourly rate, but it often works out better value once you count in fewer wasted lessons re-covering ground you have forgotten. Weekly lessons stretched over months mean paying for revision time as much as new skills, especially on a route like Dundee's that mixes the Kingsway dual carriageway with quieter Lochee streets. An intensive block, with deposits from £180 upwards based on an £18 per hour deposit rate, concentrates that spend into a shorter, more focused period, with lesson fees paid to your instructor and the DVSA test fee of £62 or £75 on top.
